Im done with the reports and proposal. gonna have fun fer a couple daes now... just bought a finished a Mario Puzo, " The Family". Took me just 16 hrs to read it. cool. Was at citylink n i saw the bk at mph, its actually the second book. The first was Fools Die. I was overwhelmed by this dark tinge hanging over as i read on...
The story goes back to The Renaissance period.. a cardinal was crowned the Pope and the papal states(present italy) was in chaos. Of the many offsprings he had.. the last 4 held a special place in his heart. The story charts his rise to Spiritual and earthly leadership( the first non native of the papal states), during this period his 2 sons grew into mighty mens and his daughter.. a great beauty. At the age of 13... Lucrezia was asked by her father to enter into a incestous relationship with his elder son, Cesare. All his childrens although beloved, were used as pawns to cement alliances between states through marriage. Now Pope Alexander as he is now known( his full is Rodrigo Borgia) believed that a women's heart will always go to the man whom she first surrendered to and he will always be the man who would command her love and loyalty. For once she gave herself to a man, she offers too the keys to her and soul.(This i believe to a certain extent, to be true even in the modern asia) Now Cesare was a great in strength but even stronger in mind, hence his father groomed him to be the next Pope, but his life was miserable as being a Cardinal seriously curtailed his desires for military ways. ok tis is gettin tiresome.. to cut the story short , The Borgia Family rose the greatness, but seeds of discord existed within the family. The youngest son, joffre presumed to be the most dim witted, was actually sharpness in mind but he ended up killing his second brother Juan whos was strong and powerful but an overbearing arrogant bugger. The character that most touched me was Cesare who died shortly after his Papa(who died from malaria). It was an ironic death. The Pope has long since made preparations that in case of his death, the family would not fall. However a miscaculated attempt resulted in the son Cesare falling ill with malaria as his Dad who died, by the time Cesare recovered, his mind was not as it was, and too much time has passed, his enemies has since moved on to appoint a new Pope. He was captured but escaped to a small county where the king treated him with grace. He offered to help the small king put down a bully baron, but died a miserable death not befitting a great man( even if he did commit incest, the way Mario wrote it.. didnt seems all that wrong during that period and situation. a man has to do whatever it takes to protect his family and assets. A man does what he has to with no regards. He has to Believe ). The army of mecenaries pulled back on a charge. He went ahead anyway... died.. sad. end of story. The book is highly reflective of how vicious the world can be... not for the innocent.
